Token Basics

What are tokens?

Students can use tokens to request exceptions to some course policies. It is similar to a form of currency specific to this course that students earn and spend throughout the semester.

Tokens are not required to pass the class. Students may earn up to an 4.0 GPA for this class without tokens. See the Grading Policies guide for details.

Students primarily earn tokens by attending class consistently and completing participation assignments.

Why does this course use tokens?

The token system is designed to encourage you to stay on-track, indicate when you are falling too far behind, while also providing you flexibility in cases of occasional illness or setbacks.

If you are falling further behind faster than you are able to earn tokens, it indicates something is not working about how you are engaging in class. In that case, reach out to the instructor to schedule a 1:1 advising appointment.

However, if you are able to keep up on content and assignments, it indicates the way you are engaging with the class is working and you do not need to be concerned with earning or spending tokens.
